Description
The power dies at 3 AM as something massive walks across the cabin roof, telling them "one more day" in a voice like wind through a collapsed throat. Marcus disappears, only to be found in the cellar butchering something frozen and human-shaped while inhabited by the Wendigo, singing about preparing the feast with knowledge learned from Josiah in his dreams. Sarah discovers recipes in the journal's final pages detailing how to prepare "the Chosen"—requiring the youngest blood relative, Emma—while another recipe reveals the chosen one can transfer the hunger to another willing family member.
As the family argues over sacrificing Emma, with Dana and David suggesting she should be given up to save the rest, the lights impossibly flicker to reveal Thomas himself: seven feet tall with fingers that touch the floor and too many teeth. Marcus emerges from the unlocked cellar with elongated fingers and white eyes, accompanied by shadows of all the cave's victims, as he begins cooking meat that fills everyone with supernatural hunger. The journal reveals a torn page from Josiah's wife Mary confessing that Thomas didn't die from infection—Josiah murdered him—and they've all become the Wendigo, carrying it in their blood.
With less than twenty-four hours until Thanksgiving, the smell of Marcus's cooking threatens to awaken the inherited hunger in their blood as they realize they're not trying to stop the Wendigo but stop themselves from becoming it.
